The newest installment of the Rocky franchise, Creed III, directed and starring Michael B Jordan as Adonis ‘Donnie’ Creed, is an emotional roller coaster revolving around one fateful night 15 years ago.
Donnie and his best friend Damian ‘Dame’ Anderson are dodging their parents and running around town competing in underground boxing matches when their lives take an unexpected turn.
Years later, Dame, now out of prison, returns to LA and expresses his desire to become a champion boxer and reunites with Donnie. Donnie is forced out of his comfortable life and returns to the ring.
The movie focuses on the intense training, transformation, and strategizing of Donnie’s return to boxing. While the training is a bit too quick and easy, the fight choreography and editing are superb and the music is perfectly synced to the action.
The movie also features some truly heartwarming scenes between Donnie and his daughter Amara (Mila Davis-Kent), who is hearing impaired, as they communicate in sign language.
Michael B. Jordan has made an impressive entrance into the world of directing with Creed 3. His expertise in understanding the nuances of a franchise movie has resulted in a standalone piece that can be enjoyed without any prior knowledge of the series. It is a promising start for the actor-turned-director, leaving us eager to see what more he has in store.
Joseph Shirley and Kramer Morgenthau’s collaboration creates an immersing experience. Shirley’s music, in tandem with Morgenthau’s cinematography, provides an extra layer of depth to the flashback sequences and the final fight. Together, the two create something special.
