Remembering Satish Kaushik: The Hindi film industry is in mourning as it bids farewell to one of its most beloved figures, Satish Kaushik. The 66-year-old actor and director passed away in India’s capital Delhi on Thursday morning, reportedly due to a heart attack.

Nishant Kaushik, the actor’s nephew, said that Satish Kaushik was travelling in a car at the time and was rushed to a hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.

Kaushik was a multifaceted talent, wearing many hats in the Hindi film industry. He was an actor, producer, comedian and screenwriter all rolled into one.

Satish Kaushik first attracted attention for his breakout performance as Calendar, a cook, in the 1987 smash Mr. India. The part allowed Kaushik to show off his comedic timing, which gained him a lot of fans. A generation of Bollywood fans was raised on practical jokes, parodies, and satire based on the legendary Calendar figure.

Satish Kaushik’s death is a great loss to the Hindi film industry, and he will be remembered fondly by his fans.

The journey of the celebrated actor, director, and writer, Kaushik, began in Delhi’s Karol Bagh area in 1956. His love for theatre took shape in Kirori Mal College, followed by the prestigious Film and Television Institute of India. In 1979, Kaushik arrived in Mumbai with a dream to make it big in Bollywood.

Fast-forward to 2020 and Kaushik’s decades of hard work had paid off. On Twitter, he shared a nostalgic photo of his journey to Mumbai, a reminder of the determination and dedication that got him where he is today. A shining example of success, Kaushik’s story is an inspiration to many.

Satish Kaushik was known to have fond memories of playing the iconic role of Calendar, but he was also often disappointed by the fact that this part typecast him as a comic actor.

However, he eventually succeeded in breaking out of the stereotype, taking on more serious roles in movies such as Calcutta Mail and even portraying negative characters. He also found success as a director and producer, helming and producing some of the most successful films in his career, including Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja, Prem and Tere Naam.

In spite of his talent and credentials, Kaushik had to battle against many biases, including being labelled as ‘too overweight’ or ‘too dark’ to be a leading man. His determination and love of cinema, however, pushed him to pursue his dreams. In his later years, he made many movies on topics that resonated with millions of viewers.

His last work as a director was Kaagaz (2021), which was the story of a man declared dead on paper by officials. Despite his successes, Kaushik was known to remain humble and was always open to discussing films, society or his favourite subject, food. He was also a fan favourite, often taking pictures with his fans.

Upon his passing, many Bollywood stars and politicians paid tribute to him. Pankaj Tripathi, who played the lead in Kaagaz, said he was “a fellow traveller in his dreams.” Anupam Kher said that he and the other had been friends for 45 years and that their friendship had changed their lives forever. Subhash Ghai described him as “a man who always laughed even in worst crisis and stood by anyone in his crisis”. Home Minister Amit Shah said the actor would be remembered for his “contribution to Indian cinema, artistic creations and performances”. Kaushik’s last appearance on the big screen will be in the upcoming period drama Emergency.
