Return of Tyler Rake in Extraction 2

It may seem obvious that Chris Hemsworth will reprise his role as Tyler Rake in “Extraction 2,” unless you enjoyed the first film. Then, it becomes a bit perplexing. Here’s how the odd figure managed to make his comeback.

After completing the rescue effort referred to in the title, Rake’s future remains uncertain after the film. The advertising for its sequel openly incorporates this story premise. Of course, the uncertainty in that conclusion was eliminated after the streaming service revealed that Hemsworth would return in “Extraction 2,” and Tyler’s survival became canon.

The first teaser for “Extraction 2” that Netflix released in September 2021 starts with a clip from the end of the first “Extraction” and concludes with a brief clip from a brand-new movie that shows Tyler opening his eyes underwater after sustaining what looks to be fatal injuries. Following that, Netflix requests that users tweet using the hashtag #Rakelives.

The second teaser for the sequel goes into more detail on Tyler’s survival, although it doesn’t completely explain how he was delivered from his dilemma. As Tyler receives medical attention, a mysterious voice says, “You were clinically dead nine months ago. But you managed to fight your way back. In light of this, a few production-related facts offer some further context for Tyler’s ability to return for the next “Extraction” sequel.

Extraction Explained

The movie “Extraction” is based on a comic book written and illustrated by Ande Parks called “Ciudad,” and it turns out that the comic’s conclusion is clearer than the movie’s. However, “Extraction” significantly changes “Ciudad,” most notably by switching Tyler Rake’s role from being in charge of a girl called Eva to escorting a boy named Ovi in the movie.

The comic was used as inspiration for the dramatic “Extraction” sequence where Tyler is shot by his assailants and plunges into a river. Although it could be the last scene spectators see of Tyler in the movie, the comic goes on to say that Tyler shows up unharmed in a hospital in Argentina.

Therefore, viewers may simply assume that Tyler survives both his gunshot wounds and the chance of drowning in the “Extraction” movie series, just like in “Ciudad.”

Tyler Rake wasn’t always expected to survive “Extraction,” which is one of the reasons the original movie ended with such a question mark. Tyler’s demise was made clear in the movie’s initial script, according to director Sam Hargrave, who discussed this in an interview with Collider. Netflix even created a version of the movie where Tyler’s demise is canon, but the “Extraction” crew chose the less clear-cut ending after receiving conflicting feedback from test audiences.

Hargrave continued by saying that when he first began working on “Extraction,” he thought Tyler’s demise was a commendable sacrifice for Ovi. However, Hargrave concluded that viewers might experience more emotional satisfaction knowing that Tyler’s attachment to Ovi helped him overcome death and continue living after speaking with Netflix executive Scott Stuber about intellectually versus emotionally satisfying endings.

Hargrave and Company decided on an ambiguous ending that offers sufficient evidence for either conclusion because they recognized that some viewers could find the “Extraction” tale more rewarding if Tyler lives while others may find it more satisfying if he dies. Therefore, “Extraction 2,” ideally with Hemsworth back in the lead, was only made possible because the original conclusion of its predecessor was modified to make Tyler’s survival a possibility.

On June 16, 2023, “Extraction 2” will premiere on Netflix, and more details about Tyler’s return will likely be revealed at that time.
