Shaakuntalam Movie Review: The eternal love story of Shakuntala and Dushyant
The eternal love story of Shakuntala and King Dushyant is one of the most famous tales from the Mahabharata period of ancient Indian literature, but sadly, very few people are aware of it. For this reason, filmmaker Gunasekar has given us the tale based on Kalidas’s Abhigyan Shakuntalam, which was directed by Gunasekar and the team.
The Plot Of The Movie
The story begins with an infant daughter of Vishwamitra and Menaka, who is abandoned by her mother because humans are not allowed in heaven. But Rishi Kanva adopted her and named her Shakuntala. In this case, Shakuntala grows up in an ashram surrounded by Mother Nature and wild animals. Years later, while pursuing animals in the jungle, King Dushyant of the Puru dynasty unintentionally wandered upon the grounds of the ashram.
That’s when King Dushyant meets Shakuntala and the two instantly fall in love with each other. Later, Dushyant weds Shakuntala in the midst of nature and animals during his brief stay at the ashram. He promised to return soon and take her away while giving her his ring as a sign of his love on the way back to his country.
Shakuntala continues to wait for Dushyant after a while. In this condition, Durvasa Maharishi once approached the ashram and inquired as to whether Kannava Maharishi was present. Shakuntala ignores Durvasa Maharishi’s words because she is preoccupied with Dushyant’s thoughts. He is upset about it and curses Shakuntala for making Dushyant forget all about her. Will Dushyant and Shakuntala cross paths once more in this circumstance? Did they reunite? That is the story.
The cast of the Movie
The second half of the movie, though, moves quickly. In addition, Samantha, who portrays Shakuntala, and Dev Mohan, who portrays Dushyant, are still anticipated to provide strong performances. It was really painful to watch Samantha, who was dressed as Shakuntala, being ridiculed while pregnant. Allu Arha, the daughter of Arjun, makes her feature film debut with this project. Fans are drawn to Madhubala’s short portrayal of Menaka. Vishwamitra is portrayed by Mohanbabu. The principal actors included Prakash Raj, Kabir Bedi, Sachin Khedekar, Gauthami, Aditi Balan, and Ananya Nagalla.
What about music and VFX?
While Samantha’s acting and beauty are adored by fans, the VFX is a major letdown, especially the creation of wild animals. While Gunasekhar’s noble efforts are to be commended for retelling this epic love story, it needs to be said that the film falls short of expectations due to a slow screenplay and poor-quality VFX. The war sequences are not fantastic. You laugh only from seeing the war scenes. The team in VFX is the worst. May have made the movie shorter. Altered, and it may be said that the movie is carried by the soundtrack. The only positive aspect of this movie is the music. Even the cinematography is decent. But the graphics are poor.
The challenge for the director is to take a story and create the appropriate script for it. The movie lasts 2 hours and 22 minutes. But this gives the impression that we’ve gone on too long. They have treated this movie like a TV serial, which is the reason. The film is utterly ruined by bad graphics, a boring narrative, ridiculous battle sequences, and cartoonish visual appeal.
The ultimate finale is Samantha’s “Shaakuntalam,” which surpasses all serials.
