Top 10 SCARIEST Movies Ever According to Science
What are the spookiest films ever made? By measuring subjects’ pulse rates, Broadband Choices’ The Science of Scare Project identified the scariest films. To identify which films caused the subjects’ BPM to increase the most, researchers compared the individuals’ resting pulse rates with those recorded when they watched terrifying films. We’re going to examine the Top 10 SCARIEST Movies Ever According to Science.
10. Paranormal Activity
The cult favorite discovered footage film from 2007, which many people rank as one of the scariest films they’ve ever seen. The average viewer’s heart rate increased by 16 beats per minute overall, with overall surges of up to 50 beats per minute, according to science, which would seem to support their claims.
9. Quiet Place Part 2
This centers on the Abbott family, who must be entirely silent to avoid being attacked by blind aliens as they navigate the dangerous world outside their house. With a spin-off and Part 3 in the works, there should be plenty more jump scares in the future for fans of the post-apocalyptic horror treasure and the original movie.
8. Dashcam
Dashcam wasn’t exactly well-liked by spectators; I, for one, found it to be more annoying than frightening. The science, however, is unfalsifiable, and spikes of up to 48 bpm indicate that there were more than enough scares to go around. Dashcam could just provide enough thrills to be worth your time if you can get past the unlikable protagonist and uncomfortable camerawork.
7. It Follows
In which a young lady discovers that a slow-moving Death, who appears to her as friend, family, and stranger, is persistently following her. With the lowest total rise on this list (32 bpm), It Follows may rely more on general dread than the more common jump scares.
6. Terrified
It’s perhaps the least well-known film on this list, but it’s also the one with the most terrifying scenes, making it something of a hidden gem for horror fans. One sequence, in particular, stands out in my memory as one of the creepiest I’ve seen in a while, including a rotting youngster seated at the dinner table who may or may not be moving.
5. Hereditary
A movie that people both adore and detest. Another movie that doesn’t depend on jump scares but instead creates an unsettling atmosphere and relies on the viewer to pick up on the scares. Hereditary should undoubtedly be viewed at least once by real horror aficionados, regardless of whether you thought it was the scariest movie you had seen in years or a tedious snooze fest.
4. The Conjuring
Viewers have been terrified by this movie and its multiple sequels and spin-offs more than any other series in the past ten years. James Wan, the director, is a master at raising our anticipation to the point where we are clenching our seats with white knuckles.
3. Insidious
Insidious appears to be the scarier movie, though only marginally, surpassing The Conjuring by a staggering 1 beat per minute, despite never quite being as well-liked as The Conjuring. However, Insidious features the most intense jump scare of any movie, increasing pulse rates by an unexpected 69 beats per minute.
2. Sinister
When it comes to Sinister, I think back on how everyone proclaimed it to be the scariest movie ever after leaving the theatre. Science appears to have proven them correct since the top film on this list was not released until many years later. The snuff films were by far the scariest aspect of Sinister, and they can be difficult to forget about after watching them.
1. Host
Host, a clever horror film made exclusively through Zoom conversations during the Covid-19 outbreak, demonstrates that you don’t need a lot of money. The movie continuously raises viewers’ pulse rates by an average of 24 BPMs, with peaks of up to 66 BPM, making it the scariest of all of them. Its brief running period of less than an hour, which leaves less opportunity for dull sections and more room for scares, may be helpful in this regard.
